Picture this: You’re cozied up under a blanket, reading a book or let’s be honest… scrolling TikTok or IG with your cup of tea. But wait, hold up…did you know your tea bag might be steeped in plastic? Not just the wrapper, but the bag itself. Eek! Let’s spill the tea on this crazy info because this tea is piping hot, and not in a good way.
Sure, some brands are ditching the plastic, but not all are as transparent. Those fancy pyramid-shaped bags? Often nylon, aka plastic. Double eek! But they look so “green” and clean, right? Wrong!
I am not here just to scare you though, there are ways around this. And I wanna help you out because it’s something I’ve been doing a lot of my own research on.
So what can we do?
Swap Tea Brands– Look for ones proudly shouting “100% plastic-free.”
I did some digging for you. And from what I can tell these brands all disclose this on their site. But as always things like this change and usually when they do they do not make a grand announcement so always do your own research and keep up on it as well for any changes.
Brands with tea bags that don’t contain plastic:
–Traditional Medicinals
-Osteas (I find this at Sprouts)
– Pukka
– Stash
– Yogi Tea
Brands with tea bags that do contain plastic:
– Tazo
– Teavana (Starbucks)
-Celestial Seasonings
– Mighty Leaf Teas (now owned by Peet’s)
Speak Up, Look Up, and Act Up-
Slide into your tea brand’s DMs and emails. Ask about their bag-sealing habits. If it’s plastic, let them know it’s not your cup of tea (literally). Check their websites to find answers and If you can’t find them, email and ask. And always remember, we vote with our dollars. Stop buying products that you do not believe in their ingredients and mission.
Go Loose Leaf– Get fancy with loose leaf tea! Use an infuser, fillable bags, a French press, or go old-school and read your tea leaves.
Ok so maybe you are like Jaclyn, what’s the big deal? Why bother with all this hassle?
Heating plastic = potential chemical leaching. Which is HORRIBLE for our hormones and our bodies. We already are exposed to so many micro plastics that intentionally adding any is a no go for me. Hormone disruptions when we are trying to have healing benefits from tea? No thanks!
Plus, tossing plastic tea bags in the compost? Not so green. Let’s sip smarter for ourselves and the planet.
Tea is natures medicine and a nice way to relax so why dirty it up and make it do more harm than good?
So, next time you cozy up with a warm cup, make it plastic-free and feel good about every sip.
